Well, we did not expect a holiday this year with the Pandemic. We feel so lucky and privileged to have spent a beautiful week at the cottage. This will be our 6th visit but with a difference…we are just a couple now as our children have grown up and we have some beautiful memories with them here at the cottage. We visited Wimereux and had a lovely ‘Moules Frites” after a nice promenade. Nausicaa (Sea Life centre) in Boulogne was a fantastic day out. Le Touquet has some great shops and a lovely big market. On the single rainy day we visited City Europe shops and bowling arcades. We loved our time and hope to be returning.

27 June to 11 July 2020
After several weeks of wondering if we would be able to travel to France for our holiday, it was wonderful to arrive on 27th June. Although the weather has been very changeable, we have enjoyed relaxing in the cottage, watching the birds, exploring the garden and shopping in the local towns and markets. Whilst the area has not been quite as “open” as usual we have visited cafés and restaurants in Desvres, Samer and Boulogne and feel very much refreshed.
The area has so much to recommend and we always enjoy our holiday at Les Marronniers. Hope to return next year.
Alan and Sue from Derbyshire (3 times visitors).

It is unusual for me to write in our guestbook since I run it for us all but these are unusual times. I came to the cottage in Feb 2020 not knowing that it would remain close for nearly four months. Being able to cross the Channel at the end of May was in itself a pleasure and a victory over this dreadful virus but one has to remain extremely vigilant. The prime purpose was to visit my elderly mother, staying at the cottage was the perfect safe place to be. The cottage was very much as I left it and all working again in good order including electricity, wifi, hot water. The garden has been kept in good order thanks to our young and devoted gardener Romain. Some weeds had however invaded the patio so our Karcher came handy.
After a couple of days I had tuned in the place completely and had a treat as a great spotted woodpecker then two of them came drilling into the fat balls on the bird feeder. As they drilled crumbs came down and the black birds had also a feast.
Romain showed me a nest with 13 eggs in the flower bed apposite the front door – these were from a mother pheasant who had been hatching them but she fled once he came close and never returned sadly.
The weather that week had been absolutely fantastic and I took most of my meals on the patio – just watching and listening to the birds. This is a busy time for them as they are reproducing and feeding their small ones. The peace and quiet of the place and the bird life made my stay one of the best I have ever had – no doubt having been in confinement home for 2.5 months contributed to that feeling of euphoria. There is no doubt that nature is a powerful healer and when you come and stay at the cottage, take time to breath the fresh air and watch the birds – this is one of the most rewarding and satisfying experiences.

I just wanted to drop you a note to say how much we enjoyed staying at your lovely cottage. What an idyllic setting and a perfect base for exploring this area of France.
We packed a lot into our 3 days and your guide was invaluable in helping us plan what to do. Highlights for us were the market in Saint-Omer followed by a walk around the marshes, a rather damp visit to Montrieul, and an early evening trip to Boulogne and not forgetting our stop in Wimereux on our way from the ferry. We rounded off each day with a few glasses of wine in front of that lovely fire, idyllic!
We will definitely return (although it looks like you’re booked up for the remainder of this year).

Thank you Jean-Pierre for providing such a fabulous gite and garden for our first stay in the Pas-de-Calais. The gite and location were perfect but the birds have eaten us out of all our food but provided hours of entertainment.
We tried lots of beaches we wanted them to be accessible for a kayak – La Baie de la Slack North of Wimereux was the best.
Had a fab day out in Montreuil-sur-mer, the lunch in the tearoom was fabulous. Le Touquet was also a good day out, particularly the market but it is expensive. We are leaving with a list of unfinished adventures. Thank you again.
17th to 23 August 2019
Many thanks to JP for a fantastic stay here we have really enjoyed the cottage and its beautiful gardens, our boys have played in their “own” park every day! Seeing the car rally go past the gate on Sunday was great fun too ! This has been a brilliant base to explore the area – helped along by some glorious warm weather. We have been the markets at Wimereux (Tuesday mid-size but varied), Boulogne (Wed smaller – not the best) and Le Touquet (Mon/ Thursday is huge and definitely the one to go for). The beaches at Le Touquet, Hardelot and Wimereux are absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit. Le Touquet has a lot going for Wimereux a bit less and Hardelot less again but all superb. We have had a fantastic week here and are sad to leave but would love to come back again.

We have had a veryn enjoyable stay in your lovely cottage. We know the area fairly wellso we have spent the week doing not very much enjoying the birds and Hardelot plage for a swim. The cottage proved very cool during the heatwave with 38 degrees. We would love to come back – thank you.

Thank you so much for the amazing apportunity to sample the absolute delights of Les Marronniers. It is everything and more than we expected. From daytrips to Le Touquet, Hardelot and Montreuil to lazing on the beach at la Duunne de la Slack it was brilliant. Peace like we have not had for a while. Thank you again.

Coming back to Les Marronniers is always a joy. We thank you for letting us stay again and we really can’t wait for next time. We have had an overdue relaxation and sometimes staying in the cottage because it is perfect made our holiday. The garden, the daffodils, the incredible birdsong, starry nights and peace all made for a fabulous stay again. Thank you both so much

We thoroughly enjoyed our winter break in your lovely cottage. What a wonderful tranquil spot and an ideal place to unwind for a few days. We hope to be back soon and explore further.
Rob, Leigh and their two children from Kent.
Many thanks for your kind hospitality – we have spent a splendid few days here in early December. The house provided a cozy retreat after our days out exploring the local area. Your guide to the local area was first-rate – a huge help. The highlights for us was a sunny venture in the Vallee de la Course, Desvres market day and a very worthwhile visit to Ypres and the Menin Gate. Le Touquet and Montreuil we know from previous visits but thanks again for a great stay. We thoroughly enjoyed the comfort of our visit here.

24thNov to 1 Dec 2018
We have had a lovely week here and have enjoyed celebrating both our birthdays in your pretty cottage. In spite of the fog and rain we have visited many places including Le Touquet and Etaples where we had a lovely lunch in a café called Les Routiers opposite “Le Comptoire de la Mer”. In Montreuil “Le Darnetal” restaurant lived up to its reputation – excellent and so friendly.
We have been to this area many times and on each occasion we have found something news and exciting. We would love to return even if the “gilets jaunes” are about.
Thank you so much. Brian & Liz (Isle of Wight)
2nd- 9thSeptember 2018
Although the weather was changeable, we both thoroughly enjoyed our week here. It is so peaceful and relaxing. Did not see so many birds though. We visited many of the laces that were recommended. The beaches at Hardelot and Le Touquet were beautiful and clean. La Coupole and Eperlecques blockhaus were amazing. Also the Batterie Todt was fascinating. Nausicaa was interesting but a bit dear for pensioners. Ewe had a clear day for visiting Cap Gris Nez – amazing to see how close we were to England.

18thAugust – 1stSeptember 2018
Our 6thconsecutive visit, apart from the mixed weather we have had another fantastically relaxing holiday. We still love Hardelot plage and visited it many times. Do try the walk up and around Mont Pele, the views are spectacular and the boys enjoyed the spooky tunnel. We also visited the second world war museum in Parc St Pierre in Calais it is a in a German Communications bunker, interesting and reasonably priced for family. It is also next to a great children’s play area ideal to let off a little steam! The highlight of the week was the car rally going right past the door. Very exciting – hope to return again soon.

11th– 18 th August 2018
Lovely holiday, the great weather meant we spent most of our time at the beach (Hardelot) which is well situated for families. Nausicaa is well worth a visit, although very busy – inevitably in the school holidays. We really enjoyed our fist family visit to France.
Fraser, Sarah and family from Bershire
Our first visit to this beautiful part of France. Lovely weather, we have had a very relaxing week. The garden is lovely and it was fabulous to watch the birds while chilling with a coffee or a glass of wine! What we liked best being in rural France:
- Richard – chill out, family time exploring the garden
- Child one (9) – the swings
- Child two (12) – quality family time and being garden master
Des bonnes vacances – merci a Jean-Pierre pour un bon accueil.

28thJuly to 4thAugust 2018
Another great week, the weather was blistering especially at the end of the week. The meal we had at the Café de l’Agriculture in the main square of Desvres was excellent. There is a good morning market at Hesdin on Thursdays. Berck is losing some of its tacky image and well worth a visit. We had enjouyable visits to St Omer and Montreuil-sur-mer. The gite is ver comfortable as usual
Pat & Peter from East Lothian.
14thJuly – 21st July 2018
Our fist visit – lovely place and area. We could have stayed every day just in the garden – watching birds – something we miss at home due to our cats. Visited lots of places and experienced the real France. Many thanks for a great holiday.

30thJune – 14thJuly 2018
This has been our second visit and we enjoyed our stay. We drove through some of the lovely villages of the Vallee de La Course, visited the Museum de Desvres, walked in the countryside and explored some of the local towns. Mostly however we relax in the lovely garden watching the birds and we have enjoyed the local produce. We can recommend it.

26thMay – 2 June 2018
This was our first visit to Les Marronniers and we have had a wonderful holiday here. We have been blessed by glorious weather every day and we have explored virtually every places that Jean-Pierre mentioned in his extremely useful visitor guide book. We have eaten out every lunch time and then return to spend the late afternoon and evening relaxing in the beautiful gardens and gite.
This was our fist holiday without our children and what memories we shall take back with us, whilst being completely refreshed and relaxed as well. We hope the blue-tits family fledges soon as they have certainly been very vocal and the parents worked so hard with their feeds. All the wildlife has been glorious to watch every day. Thank you Jean-Pierre & Hilary for a welcoming us to your gite and long may it continue. We would certainly love to visit again.
Catherine and Gordon from Norfolk.
25th – 28th September 2017
We have enjoyed our third visit to Les Marronniers. The cottage is very comfortable and everything at hand. Thank you for really providing many comforts. The weather has been bright and warm and the surrounds begging to look stunning with early Autumnal colours. Until our next visit here – Carole David – Gravesend in Kent.
13 – 17th Sept 2017
Our first visit to France with our grown-up daughter.
A beautiful home-from-home at Les Marronniers. We found everything we needed warm and cosy, and delightful to wake up to the sounds of nature all around.
It is in a perfect location to visit impressive old towns such as Montreuil and Bruges (Belgium). As rural farmers ourselves we were impressed buy the strong agricultural surroundings with a fine example of sustainable farming. We would highly recommend and would be keen to return. Thank you.

Our second visit this year and our previous observations are still very much valid. The weather had been good quite mild and we were able to sit out on the pation on a number of days. A pity the lawn grass was a bit long. Thanks to Jean-Pierre and his lovely cottage.

6th to 16 September 2017
We had a lovely relaxing holiday despite the cool and windy and at times wet weather. We were not able to enjoy the lovely garden fuly which is a shame – this is our 12th visit and it seems like home to home. Many thanks to Hilary and Jean-Pierre.

Where to start?
A beautiful cottage with an even more beautiful garden – love the fireplace in the evening. So much to discover in the area, would recommend Nauticaa in Boulogne and the beach and the town of Le Touquet. Would also advise Belgium especially Tyne Cot cemetery and Ieper. Such a beautiful town with the Menin Gate to commemorate those kicked in the Great War who have no graves. Well worth a visit our children ages 11 and 7 both appreciated it. We spotted lots of wildlife in the area including owls, bats hares and kestrels as well as all of the other birds. A thouroughly enjoyable week had the whole family – The Exxxx family – West Sussex
12 to 19th August 2017
Only one wet day in the whole week so we managed to explore new places. The Blockhaus at Eperlecques – this bunker is quite unique. There is much to see and spend two hours there. The audio commentary is in four languages there. The other place to visit is Audressels (on the coast south of Calais) it seems to have changed little in 150 years. Avoid a very windy day if you decide to visit this fishing village. We had a meal at the Auberge D’Inxent (not too pricey but excellent) and eh Ferme Auberge Le Blaisel in Wirwignes (excellent food at reasonable prices). The cottage is well equipped and very comfortable.
Pat & Peter – East Lothian
5th to 12th August 2017
We all enjoyed staying here. We enjoyed going to 3 different beaches – Hardelot – Le Touquet and Wimereux. Alex and Ella played in the garden sometimes and we saw pretty flowers and plants and trees. We all thought the beds were particularly cozy and Ella and Sam went to the nearby boulangerie – baguette and croissants are very yummy.
We have all enjoyed our stay in France and it has been very sunny .

Our fist visit to Les Marronniers and we have been most impressed with the cottage – very comfortable, all the facilities of home light and airy and of course the beautiful garden. We have spent time watching birds whilst in the garden enjoying the peace and quiet.
The weather has been changeable and so we have not ventured out too far but have visited the museum in Desvres stopped at the market ~(Tuesday morning) and had a delicious lunch there at the Brasserie de l’Agriculture.
Local people have all been most friendly and helpful. We hope to return to this lovely area and stay at Les Marronniers – with many thanks for a most enjoyable holiday

So glad we decided to stay here – usually do B&B’s however this gave us much more freedom. The weather has been mixed some hot days and some cloudy but it has not spoiled our holiday. Enjoyed watching the various birds and the feeder with emptied within 24h at home it takes 6 months …Managed to stock up with some nice wine and butter. Gite was perfect, everything we needed and very clean. Wifi and TV are a bonus on a bad day. Love to visit again.

We did not want to leave! 1st week was not very good weather wise but this allowed us time to go and explore (the are around here is wonderful). Our 2nd week was full of lovely hot summer days so we are ashamed to say we did not do much just sitting and enjoying the garden and drinking some lovely wine …it is such a hard life! Thank you so much I really hope we can come back.

Our first visit to Les Marronniers and most definitely not our last. Lucky with the weather hit a mini heat wave so took full advantage of the garden and bbq. Too hot for sightseeing but maybe we will venture further in our future visits. House is beautiful and the area is so quiet apart from an impromptu pop concert the from neighbors house on first evening (son 18th birthday party) .
